What More Evidence Do You Need?

Ah, the joys of schadenfreunde.

Well, its not really schadenfreunde. People were told over and over what was coming, but for whatever reason, decided to be like Lindsay Lohan and ignore some very sound advice. These folks aren't really suffering from misfortune, or even simple ignorance.

It is outright stupidity.

Aesop was a slave, yet told fables with central themes that can only be described as truth. Sometimes it would seem that "truth", especially today, tends to be malleable depending on who is telling the tale. But then, is it really truth, an opinion, or worse.... an outright lie? Examine the central truths within Aesop's fables and see if they are malleable, or rigid. Have they survived millennia essentially unchanged?

Or are they like the pronouncements of the learned and esteemed men and women of today? The pronouncements they label as truth. Global Warming is now Climate Change. Obama's promise of "change" and yet, we're still embroiled in two wars and how many police actions? Unemployment is shrinking, yet the numbers of new applicants for benefits grow each day. Even as people drop off the roles because their benefits have been exhasuted. The Patriot Act, ostensibly a tool to protect Americans from terrorism, but in fact the very structure to leave Americans vulnerable to the predations of the uniformed, gun wielding terrorists at home.

Two of Aesop's most famous fables concerned a tortoise and a hare, and an ant and a grasshopper. To a prepper, these are central to our core philosophy. Slow and steady wins the race, and to prepare for days of necessity.

The days of necessity are upon many around the globe. Those of you who have yet to prepare still have time, but you best get at it now. Before the panic sets in.

World Food Prices Hit Record High

Banana Crop, Sugarcane suffer total devastation

Rain Too Late To Save Corn and Soy Crops

Cold Could Damage Texas Citrus and Onions

Cotton Crop Short By 1.65 MILLION BALES

As the weather continues to be ugly, and the chance of severe spring flooding here in the United States increases, prospects for making up for the disastrous early part of 2011 shrink.

Slow and steady, people. But pick up the pace just a wee bit.

Once again you have come up with a great and useful post! I couldn't agree with you more about the need to pick up the pace on putting aside more preps!

The scary part is, many places selling freeze dried or dehydrated foods for long term storage are under big back orders because of lack of basic food items. At the same time, many canned foods are increasing in price in nearly all stores.

Things are NOT going to get any better, only more complicated!

Hey Jim,

Thanks for your thoughts, buddy. The time for freeze dried or dehydrated foods being the bulk of one's preps has probably passed. Early in 2010, we were seeing producers having difficulty meeting demand. Remember, some of these companies also produce MREs.

The additional issue is these require lots of water to reconstitute, and unless people have access to clean water in an emergency situation, it is just so much sawdust.

Canned foods have their own water content, and yes, they are becoming more expensive. People need to look at this in a different way. It isn't that the canned food is more expensive, it is that their money is worth less. Obama and gang have injected so much paper into the system, that it is becoming as valuable as sand in the Sahara.

However, there are places all over the country that sell canned goods at sometimes over 50% less than traditional stores.

Most people never look for them.

Check this page out. It lists by state food salvage stores.

www.andersonscountrymarket.net/directory

Then you have stores like Aldi, Save-A-Lot, Grocery Outlet which will typically save you 40% compared to mainline stores.

Then you have Interstate Brands (Bakery Outlets) www.bakeryoutlets.com where you can pick up packaged foods, and dried foods like gravies and soups cheap.

I'll have to do this as a post tonight. I did one early in the life of this blog, but perhaps it is time to update it.

Strange as it may sound, I like most of the MREs that I've tried! But then, I even like Spam!

Guess I'm a little strange sometimes, but at least I won't go hungry!

Catman, long time lurker here. Need to tell ya thanks for what you do. I enjoy your site and insight.

Yes, Aldis and Save a Lot stores are a great source for saving money on food. Dollar general and Big Lots have specials too, but you have to be on the ball & be there to get them. That usually counts me out.

Hey Anonymous,

Thanks for the links.

Grumpunk.

Thank you sir, for the kind words. You don't have to really on the ball when it comes to these stores.

Just ask one of the guys who does stocking in the morning when they get their trucks in. In the case of Big Lots, ask them what days the canned and other foods are usually delivered. That way, you know the best days to get there.
